It’s the first day of Summer and all I can think about is the Fourth of July in only a few weeks. Our independence, our freedom and how much that means to me especially as years go on.
With everything around us seems to be going wrong lately, I want this upcoming Fourth of July celebration to be extra special for me and my family. That is why I decided to bake one my favorite desserts to serve them. In my eyes, nothing says let freedom ring more than my All-American Apple Pie. Yes, it might be original but no one turns down apple pie especially my family. It’s so heavenly when it’s served warm then topped with vanilla ice cream don’t you agree?
My recipe is super simple and takes not much time to prepare. First, you will need a few ingredients.
I purchased a package of pre-sliced Macintosh Apples. This totally will save you tons of time without the hassle of cutting or slicing apples. You can find the pre-sliced apples in your produce department. I also picked up store-bought pie crust to make it a breeze for me.
Next, you will need white sugar, ground cinnamon and nutmeg, all-purpose flour, a pinch of salt, brown sugar, and butter.
Combine your sliced apples, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and nutmeg in a large bowl. Continue to stir until the mixture covers your apples.
Take your pie crust and line it into your pie dish.
Spoon your apples into your pastry-lined pie plate. Dot with butter.
With this lattice apple pie recipe, I decided to give it a more country appearance by adding pastry leaves made from additional pie crust and leaf cutouts. I also wanted to symbolize my All-American Apple Pie by also cutting out a red shaped pastry crust star.
I found it quite easy to do and all you will need is red food coloring, water, and a pastry brush.
Once you have placed the lattice pastry strips and cutouts onto your pie, use a fork to make imprints around the edges of your pie crust. You can also roll the pastry dough to give your pie a different look.
Using one egg white, I brushed the edges and cutouts to prevent them from burning. It’s also a great idea to cover the edges with foil.
My All-American Apple Pie is golden with a flaky crust. The flavor from the apples is so delicious! It’s the perfect way to celebrate the Fourth of July with family and friends or your next gathering or cookout.
