Back to School Routines are always a hard adjustment for children to make. Come learn about which tips help me the most.
It’s hard to predict what a new school year might bring for your children. As parents, we only hope for the best. Am I right? Some children including my own, get so excited leading up to the first day back to school that it causes them to have anxiety and lack of sleep. I believe that many of us have experienced those same emotions when returning back to school. It’s awful but it’s something that we all have overcome. The night before school started was the worst for me. I would toss and turn in bed for hours. Basically getting only a few hours of sleep each night and you know what that means, I was too tired to concentrate and focus on my work in school. That is why I truly believe in back to school routines. It’s so important to start each morning feeling rested and ready to tackle what the day will bring.
This current school year will be different for my children. They are attending a new school which means new teachers and meeting new friends. It sounds exciting but it’s never an easy transition at first. They have a lot to worry about when it comes to school. Like getting their homework or reports done on time. Believe me, stress can come at an early age. There is so much to learn in days time for my third and six graders. That is why as their mother, it’s a top priority to make sure they receive the best quality of sleep each night. Sleep routine and consistency are key for back to school routines.
Did you know that according to The Better Sleep Council,“ a regular bedtime strengthens circadian rhythms and helps ensure adequate time for sleep? Kids will learn what to expect and bedtime will become a non-negotiable part of the day. Following a consistent routine aids in the development of healthy sleep habits that result in quality sleep.” Terry Cralle, RN, MS, Certified Clinical Sleep Educator.
Let’s face it, getting the proper amount of sleep each night is important for their bodies. Even more so for us parents. I’ll admit, my sleep schedule routine has been off since the beginning of summer. From staying up late when I have deadlines to meet the next morning, or binge watching my favorite shows on television past midnight. -And do you know what? When I am up late at night, I drag myself to the coffee maker the next morning. I do realize that when I am well rested, I become more organized, and productive throughout the day which is a good thing.
Getting my children off to bed early doesn’t come without some type of complaints from them. It’s hard to ask someone who is 11 years old to go to sleep by 8 or 9 pm each school night. One of the things that I’ve asked my children to do is put down their phones and electronic devices. I’ve noticed that once they did, their restful sleeping habits became more noticeable. Such as waking up early, and prepared to walk out the door to school on time.
